On Tuesday, I toured many mansions in the Gold Coast — each one historic, unique and priced somewhere between 2 and 6.5 million dollars. In total, the homes added up to $50,000,000 worth of real estate. Zeros for emphasis.
I felt small as I walked through the open houses. I say that both literally and figuratively. For one, the properties were much larger than the condos and apartments I’ve grown accustomed to seeing. Elevators. Winding staircases. Rooftop decks. Backyards. Laundry rooms. Wine cellars. Libraries. I could go on.
Moreover, the tour was humbling. I tried to move slowly, picturing my own life in such places, in such palaces. I truly believe that every home is special, but there was something peculiar about these listings on Scott, Astor, Dearborn. I’m very grateful for the chance to step inside.
