While I was away in Paris, Kate closed on her Gold Coast fixer-upper, effectively becoming both a home flipper and a landlady (for the time being). The unit is a lofted one-bedroom with southern city views, and it’s spectacular at golden hour.
Kate and I met at the University of Illinois. For a time, we were in the same sorority. I knew her to be wildly funny, and years later, she’s still that way. While we were working together, I’d constantly find myself laughing out loud at her texts. Here’s a gem from a conversation about her new tenant: “Hopefully he’s my future hubby though. I mean we have the same taste in real estate ammmiright?”
Kate’s new condo is around the corner from mine, and she’s renovating, too. Her plans include polished concrete floors and a glammed-up kitchen — I know it will be the coolest place on Dearborn Street. For her closing gift, I decided on Homefront by Windsor Smith. I’m obsessed with every page, and hopefully the designs inspire Kate as well.
